Also what's the problem with an all-female cast? I mean it's not like most videogames have a male protagonist to begin with...
However we are exploring ideas surrounding additional games that would feature two male characters (Spade and Torque) in the future.
Guess that means no Rena in FP2
well Rena would not really fit in since there are no humans in the Freedom Planet world. I would love to see a Grapple Force Rena 2 though and have Grapple Force Rena ported to the Switch. using her grapple abilities with the Switch motion control would be awesome if it was done right.
playable male characters would be okay but I don't really mind the all girl Freedom Planet team. right now we all just want game to come out, if characters like Spade and Torque do become playable it should be worked on and released as a DLC after Freedom Planet 2 is released.
if you need a excuse to tell your son why there are no playable male characters tell him the truth, female characters like Lilac, Carol, and Milla are hot and more likely to distract you and get you killed in stages with their furry beauty
Joking or not, that's... kinda gross. We're talking about a 6-year-old here - teaching him to sexualize the characters he's playing would be seriously inappropriate, whether those characters are anthro or not. Sorry if I sound like a feminist killjoy (I guess that's what I am), but the message I'd hope my kids would get from FP's girl-power cast would be that it's OK to have stories that center awesome female-coded characters.
OP, I honestly wouldn't worry too much - if your boy can get past the fact that he's playing a purple dragon from an alien planet, I'm sure he'll eventually get past the fact that she's a giiiiirl ;)
PS: Why caring about the gender of fictionnal creatures in a videogame?
PPS: @Relax! I be a Doctor! Don't say that kind of thing, no wonder why we look down to you people
I guess children just feels more comfortable when playing as a character that matches their gender when really, there's no shame in playing as the opposite.
That's absolutely fine and reasonable.
In fact I don't understand only one thing - why some users are trying to convince someone to think about/like something in different way than he/she does. Seriously, I always considered the fact that we don't need to excuse for our taste (in terms of video games, but not only) as something obvious, no matter if we're talking about small child, 30-years old man or 80 years-old grandmother.
Out of curiosity - could you please explain what "girl power vibe" do you have in mind?
That's a little strong, I feel - nobody is trying to force the OP to change how they feel, and the commentary on this post has been very polite, on the whole.
I'd say that thinking about a piece of media by asking yourself, "why do I feel this way about it?" is pretty much core to gaining a critical appreciation of it - that kind of discussion can be really useful and illuminating, especially when it feeds into wider questions like: "why are male protagonists the norm in children's media?" As someone trying to get some YA fiction published, that's one I think about a lot!
Personally, I like the opportunity to examine any piece of media through a fresh new critical lens, and have done since I was a kid. When you entertain the possibility that we *can*, to an extent, account for taste, you can learn a lot about the culture you absorb and about yourself. So, yeah... that's my answer, I guess!
Or just tell him to deal with it.
