Any way to cap fps at 240?

I have a 240hz monitor but game only allows 144 cap or unlimited. Issue is when I put it at unlimited it maxes out my gpu and cpu and my pc gets really hot. I just want 240 fps max if that is possible lmk

Why do you need 240 fps? The human eye can't notice a change faster than ~60, you'll only see the image a bit jerky at times if it's under that.

I've used it to limit games that were thrashing my card :)

Use RivaTuner, you can download it along with MSI Afterburner or just look it up. With RivaTuner, you're able to set the FPS cap you want or alternatively, you can use the scanline sync feature to have it act like Vsync. Either way, one of those should give you what you want.

Edit:
You can set the framerate limit to work globally on every application/game or you can select a specific game buy hitting the add button at the bottom and finding the exe file.
