Just Beat Pharaoh
I just had a pretty epic run. I rolled Sekhmet and on the first floor picked up a curse that limited me to one weapon. I took the dual pistols and worked very hard at making every shot count as running out of ammo would mean ruin. I made it all the way to the Pharaoh battle and took it down to only one more hit worth of health.... then my ammo ran out. I really thought my run was over so, having acquired 5,000+ gold, decided to let the little minions kill me during the fight. Lo and behold, I had forgotten about a scroll I had picked up which reflected damage back to attackers. The Pharaoh fell. Pretty epic.

P.S. I really, really, really encourage the developers to add an always available melee attack. Even if its incredibly low damage, ANYTHING would be better than being stuck with full health and no means of attacking.

Just had another epic fight. I was having a terrific run on the first pyramid using the default Redneck character. I picked up about 8 useful scrolls and found myself an Assault Rifle which I immediately found my new favourite. When I was cursed to one weapon. By this point I was on floor 5, and the blessed Assault Rifle, with its ample ammo stores, was enough to win the day against the boss. It was a bit scary, considering I had an additional curse of not being able to see my health. Thankfully, I still managed without too much trouble. Upon entering the second pyramid, I cleared the first floor. Then died pretty soon after. Time to upgrade. :)

I almost beat the boss. The best I've ever done is with a scroll that limited me to one weapon but made it more powerful At first I thought it was a bad scroll ... but that extra power was ALOT of extra damage. Almost overpowered. Until the boss. He's difficult.

SexyPanther, it's odd that you're asking for an emergency melee weapon when a lot of the enemies are flying and ranged, and unhittable in melee. All three of the bosses I've encountered so far are flying or exist outside of melee range.

I think the Ankh would be a good always-available fourth weapon for all characters. It's ranged, weak, has infinite ammo, and is the symbol for life, which is a good for for the IMMORTAL Redneck to have in all incarnations.

Agreed. Except each God would have a weapon which is weaker than the rest but has never-ending ammo. that would just be standard, the first weapon in the "one" slot has infinate ammo, like the wand in Ziggurat. that would solve the problems.

Update: I think there is exactly one boss in the game which is reliably hittable with a melee weapon. Since bosses are one of the points where you are most likely to run out of ammo, Not much point in an emergency weapon which isn't ranged.
