Animal Taming: Brown Bear = no gain
I have animal taming 41.1 and brown bear give literally no gain. They are tameable however.

I tried taming brown bears at 40, had the almost no chance message which usually means eventually you will get one but i couldnt. Wasnt getting any skill gains either. I tried again at around 42-43 taming, and started getting gains.

As soon as i was getting gains from them i was able to tame them with the almost no chance message. It seems the almost no chance message shows up a couple skill points before you actually can tame them and gain from them.

I prefer to tame things i barely succeed at as you still gain from fails yet dont have to waste time releasing, killing and finding another one until you eventually do succeed.

Brown bears are way better than black, a pack of 5 is actually usable to kill the lower level undead. Does anyone know if there are any better combat pets between brown bears and grizzlies/giant beetles that are at around 60 taming?

hmm, i went there yesterday with 4.4 or so and it worked. i have noticed, however, that on the wiki list the minimum skill cap seems to be off by 0.1-0.2 points. wasnt able to tame black bears at 39.1 but it worked at 39.2. knowing this i went to the brown bears a little later and had no issues at all.

I think I found the reason. You can try tame it, as if you had a chance, even low (if its 0 you cant start tame), but it actually has no chance and also does not give any gain. There is hidden requirement on beastmastery for the brown bear it seems. The moment I had it from 33.5 to 40.0 I was able to get gains on both lore and taming!

i see, but yeah. when it says that you have almost no chance of taming you can actually tame it at a very low chance, however, you wont gain any skills from it.

Not entirelly. In my case I did get skill for trying tame horse (at 30.0 taming, the chance was said to be low), and now also for the brown bear. But for the brown bear the gains started after I had 40.0 beastmastery. Maybe it did earlier, I just pushed it to 40.0 and tried again. Maybe you had exactly the same thing with beastmastery and no gain?

*edit* AH Isee, what you refered. Yeah I thought before you can't tame. Then I was wrong about that you can not tame it, but maybe you can, just without gains if your beastmastery is to low.

yeah at this point im not even sure what the real requirements were. my beastmastery was at approximately 33 yesterday when i tamed brown bears. so it seems it is only affected by animal lore and taming. however, the obedience of your animals is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if you havent a high enough beastmastery :lunar2019grinningpig: trainted it yesterday after i had my bears to almost 50 and now im fine.

yeah they do not obey very well with low beastmastery. But If you did not get any gains, with 33 BM its exactly what I had, when I did not get any gains. After raising it to 40, I started get gains.
