UO Outlands is probably better.

Why would I play UO Outlands when I can play LoU? LoA's better graphics with UO's systems and a great community.

"LoA" and "good graphics" aren't things that go together. The game runs poorly on top of it, but the game is objectively ugly for the minimum requirements posted.

At least UO Outlands is free and closer in spirit to the original than a cobbled together Unity game, especially since LoU depends on login servers CS runs. In the event this new update kills their income and they go under, there's some uncertainty.

Have you played on the LoU server? It’s incredible. I’ve played Outlands, it’s fun, but it’s nowhere near what LoU is.

LoU has the look and feel of Ultima without the decades old client. I spent many years in UO, they were the best of times growing up and playing on the community servers through Aria has brought it back to life again for me. It’s reminiscent enough of UO to hit you in the feels but expands further to be a true successor rather than copy paste.

I hope you’ve tried it before saying Outlands is better. If not try it and come back to me I promise you won’t look back.

We have exceptionally different needs. I've seen LoU, and honestly it would be better if they didn't build on top of LoA's crappy store assets. They're doing a better job for sure, but CS is still a gatekeeper and I don't expect them to be around for a long time. It's a liability for LoU, and giving money to CS to play LoU is also not appetizing. Is unfortunate that LoU isn't the main project here, maybe things would be different overall. There's more problems, but that is a huge one. If I hadn't paid for Shards Online several years ago, I never would have bought LoA based on video and screenshots from actual players.

Anyway, moving on.

I played LoA during winter months, and somehow my power bill shot up higher in a month where I'm not using the A/C compared to my spiked-rate summer bills. I switched to another MMO (that looks better and has better combat) and dropped $40 a month in power bills WHILE running the A/C. The game looks terrible for this sort of resource usage. The game simply isn't worth that cost per month. Yes, bills were double checked because it's pretty outrageous to think that's possible, but even now my my performance monitor isn't lying. This game just eats resources on the title screen, more than Star Citizen during a firefight. This is a major disadvantage for LoU, because I'm not interested in stressing my hardware to that degree now that I'm aware.

On top of that, if I'm going to play a UO successor, I need real changes and evolution. Macroable combat is just not doing it for me anymore. I need engagement. Skillshots, dodging, timed blocks or reflects. The more I play, the more I realize that I liked UO and its PvP more as a memory from childhood rather than the best gameplay there is to experience. The combat might work for some, but and I can appreciate that LoU is doing it's best to recreate the past with what it's got, but I need meaningful, well designed change. If I want a time capsule with some upgrades, Outlands does the job without the computer strain.

The RP and detail (putting chairs down in the wilderness and waiting for someone to show up, playing chess in-game, etc.) carried UO for me from 98 to 02, and other games are beginning to offer much better detail and/or much more engaging gameplay.

Best of luck, but the association to LoA is a negative aspect to me.

Auburok, I'm sorry you feel so negatively about LoA but I don't think you have any sort of an argument against LoU by what you've described. LoU feels like an entirely different game than LoA. Sure, there are some intrinsic limitations being a community shard of a lacking base game, but we have hella active devs busting their buns to gather our feedback and implement it for us.

It really is a shame that LoU isn't the main project but why should that stop someone from checking it out? Our community collectively donates more than enough to cover more than the server costs monthly. I'm guessing if something were to happen to LoA, LoU devs would find a way to keep it.

Also I am disappointed that you have not actually tried the combat in LoU but feel the need to say it is not engaging. PvP is 100% what drove me from VE to LoU.
Your RP scenario sounds a lot like our building a campsite for the stat buff and waiting for unsuspecting blues. Just saying. Hard to speak so passionately on something you haven't actually tried.

I agree, actually, which is why I'm excited for the new custom Britannia map and custom housing assets that the staff are working on.

My main concerns and desires are still not addressed.

Playing LoA for a few months and an LoU toedip were an informative experience for me: time to move on to something I'll end up enjoying longer.

Thanks for the invite (and assumptions) though!

After reading the about the lack of content for Legends of Aria, I decided to hold of on purchasing it. However, this Legends of Ultima has piqued my interest. How big is the player base?

@Kepp Player numbers aren't published, but I can safely say that it's growing every single day. Seeing a huge influx today as well of players from Steam Launch looking for those UO feels!

I'd strongly recommend getting on our Discord and checking the wiki for more information.

I bought the game for LoA and stayed for LoU. Community there is active and thriving, you won't regret trying it out.
