Ending?

So major spoilers for at least one of the endings (I think) but is there a way to not die when you fight the dude riding the Wyrm after your exile? Because I was reading some reviews people made and it seemed like that was the only ending really...

the dude is a deserter and doesn't particularly want to fight. He just doesn't want to get caught

I've also run into some trouble with the deserter. If my griffin is not particularly aggressive I can get past him without resorting to violence, but if the griffin does have high aggression then seemingly every time I keep getting to the situation where I have to choose to save either my character or the griffin and lose the other.
