How to get to the attic (potential spoilers)
I picked up the key from the board right hand side (iirc) after I started the game if that matters.

I found keys to the basement and the garage room. The game heavily suggest to me that I should somehow reach the attic. I know where the opening to the attic is. I also found a stool, but that doesn't seem to work, even if placed directly beneath the attic opening. So presumably I need to find a hook of sorts. Any help on where to find it?

If you've already seen the man wandering the halls, then check the progress room at the start

This game makes no sense, and not in a good, "spooky" way. I also tried using the step stool to get in the attic, because why wouldn't you? There are also tall ladders and a broom and various other tools that could be used as a hook to get the handle, but of course not... Cool "puzzles"...

I'm also confused by this. I carried the stool all the way up and placed it under the attic hatch, but it's useless, I can't climb it.

I've spent 2 hours on this game and have found tons of keys to unlock nearly everything, mass stockpiled lighters, candles, pills and lightbulbs in the front doorway by the radio that keeps turning on, found two comic pages, found a ton of those Russian dolls, blew through a wall and found the secret gun room from the very beginning of the game, found a curious God of War symbol box hidden in a secret room and the only "spooky" thing I found was a mirror that has appeared 3 times to point me to the attic I haven't been able to reach yet. Lol.....

Until you initiate a 'chapter', the game is in pretty much a freeroam 'overworld' state with very low tension. It's a good time to fine-tune your sensitivity, graphic settings and keybinds. Otherwise, you should perhaps investigate the little hallway by the front door (or peep a kids scribble in an obvious place) to start a chapter. It'll prompt you before you start one.

Yeah, it really worked to my advantage because I knew my way around everything. It even lets you get the fuse and setup the breaker box so you don't have to deal with that later. That trigger to enable the guy walking around the house and the Delores chapter just seemed to take forever to trigger for some reason to start. Not sure why but now I'm almost finished with her.
