can't use keys?

I got the basement key, but when i get to the door there seems to be a green overlay over all of the key inventory, including the key, I cannot use or examine, wondering if anybody else has encountered this, also at one point the key totally disappeared I had to reload a automatic save.

on another note this game is amazingly beautiful and scary, good job ! :)

I'm gonna answer my own question because I figured it out... I'm on PC and the way I got it to work is by using my arrow keys on the keyboard, then once the key is selected, i pressed E and it worked. Not sure if it's supposed to be this way but thats how I got around it.

I found using keys awkward, turns out at one point I had the key needed to access several rooms but didn't know i had it, wish it would just show an unlock option once the key was in your inventory...
