Server/Hosting Question

Where are the servers for this located, regionally?
Does it have local hosting peer to peer or would a friend and I have to connect through game hosted servers?

the official servers have the regional location in their name, IE NA for North America, OC for oceanic(Asia/Australia), etc.

You can also host servers on a dedicated machine in your home(using port forwarding on your router and a machine capable of running the server software), or through a provider. they typically rent you a server based on what location you choose on an internet backbone. Hosthavoc, for example, hosts from several locations, my preferred being montreal canada or Chicago.
