If nothing else, always have a Firefly with you -- It provides light which means you don't have to resort to a mining hat when digging or putting torches everywhere, can carry and extend food life, and while it can take a long time to increase its carry weight to 300+, that means giving it 3 stacks of Quartz will only weigh you down by 150. A good starting weight of ~200 means you can get there quicker.
