Use gold to improve magics like berserk (Lv.10 for more damage done), fire (Lv.1 for decreased enemy resistance), ice (Lv.10 for freezing enemies in place, almost like a time stop but beware to be out of danger before it wears off), then the trap for area damage or astro paw for damage while healing (both optional in the end but great early on).
For XP the floating skulls in the top center area, they spawn again as you save/quit/load back.
And dodge like a GOD : D
PS: it is a while I'm not playing it so terms are quite generic, anyway try and see what best fit your style. Be back later for Mew Game.
Edit: never mind, the chests in the field have too much health. I've been power levelling in ETA ruin, close to the top right edge of Furrbidden fields and windmew lake. Defeat the blue dragon, get ~1000xp go into ruins, get ~700 per skull heads and 77 per fist. Then exit and go back in. Repeat and gain 1 lever per 2 runs. You can also try Old master's ruin, those fists give ~90 and the skull heads give ~900xp.
