Tipps for Allies

So I have some experience with SCWW2 (I bought it before Steam release), but I haven't been playing much.

I started my first online game and would like to hear some tipps for a PBEM Allied player.

The way I see things there are esentially two rough approaches for Allies strategy till 1941;

I) Play conservative and defend
II) Try some surprise offensives , e.g trasfer BEF to Marseilles and pressure Italy, or transfer it to Africa or Norway. This usuallly means France falls early.

Do you think the current meta and gamebalance favours the first or the second playstyle ?

Also, how much do you invest in research as UK in the early years ? Research is a long term investmet, I'm not sure does it pay off to research much while Axis takes your land.

This for online only:

Except for the MIddle East play conservative (against the AI you can gamble but the Axis have so many spare units not against a player) - but attack with France (you will lose them anyway and you might as well spend the French production on taking units to full and replacing losses).

Spend on units not research until about mid 1940 with the probable exception of anti-submarine research.
