What am I missing

Ive been playing this game for hours trying to figure it out.... I know several things end the game, and Ive got to be missing something.

when you get to the water area place theres some sort of cryptogram? am I missing something with that, because after all the letters flash on screen and the talking stops I cant figure out anything else to do other than walk off the edge and end the game.

Same here, nothing to be done it seems than listening to the music. Is this the end of the game?

Oh wow I didn't know you could get to a water area place. I ended up finding a use for the axe which helped me progress to a different area.

Okay, I completed the water area and as far as I know that is just one of the endings so I believe that's all there is to it.
