I know it's not ideal (and it's not 100% effective), but generally, if the host chooses "Load Autosave" from the menu, it should get you back to a decent state.
We did try the load autosave feature, which would un-stick me for a time, until we reached the same locations which would make me or her stuck again. In the end we just didn't buy all the items in the shops, and for puzzles we would try a different combination of abilities that would hopefully fix the issue.
Using the magnetic lifts later on in the game would also usually cause an issue, particularly the part where you race the other player to collect the most trash.
The following actions would cause the controller issue,
+ Buying all the add-ons from the bike shop.
+ The two-player crane trash-collector challenge (I would steal from my wife's pile before the end, then I wasn't able to move my character, after a reload I only grabbed a shopping cart and stopped pressing anything and could keep moving.)
+ Exiting indoor locations on day 2 (we went to the main town and randomly exiting a shop would cause the controller to freeze.)
+ Running over the old-man's painting with the bike (the bike would coast along and then come to a stop.)
