Dungeon Painter Studio

Dungeon Painter Studio

Exporting, and other questions.
So, I normally use Roll20, or just regular paper for mapping, although I will be losing internet soon, so I was hoping to find something that would make my maps easy to read at a glance, but also fun to use, like Roll20.

I was wondering what the maps look like when you export them from Dungeon Painter Studio; can they become .png or .jpg for easy viewing on systems that do not have DPS installed? I have a laptop that I usually take with me when I plan on DM'ing, but it's not particularly powerful, so ideally I would like to have things finished on my Desktop PC, then transfer the finished maps/images to my laptop. Is this a possibility, or do the maps only export as special files for use in DPS/Roll20?

Also, despite the positive review for DPS, I've heard mixed experiences about the state of DPS at the moment. What are people's thoughts on its use use, compared to Roll20 and other such programs?

Hey,

Apps that use steam as a platform do have some dependency on an internet connection - I am not sure how this would impact upon DPS - though some apps can be used offline. One thing though - Roll20 is an app that 100% requires internet access as its accessed through a browser.

Regarding Maps using DPS you can export maps as JPG or PNG file formats which of course has no dependency on an internet connection of DPS. These maps can be transferred to any device that can open a JPG/PNG image - no need for DPS on other machines.

DPS has settings programmed in for export for standard VTT such as Roll20 and FG - so a click of a couple of buttons you can export with the right settings. The maximum you can export though is 200px = 5ft.

Regarding using the app - I have several YouTube videos that can be found at : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxXh3nf4UYOKZ3wiqQugjtQ

The videos will give you a quick overview as to what is possible.

I would also suggest you check and confirm Steam's return policy before you make a decision. I believe you can buy it and return it if you have problems within 2 hours(?) though you will need to check that. This way you can TRY and RETURN.

Regarding the actual product, there are a few things you have to consider and be aware of when you make your maps - but making maps is very, very simple and quick.....

Simply draw the floor first and then right click the floor in the entity and select "Add Wall". Next apply an effect for long shadow on the wall. After this - add objects such as chairs, debris...etc and your done.

I have used DPS on Steam since Pyro has released it over 2 years ago. The product is still labelled as Beta which concerns most people - dont be concerned it is fully functional.

The maps I export I use with in Fantasy Grounds and they do look great.

Yeah, I know Roll20 is online only, that's why I thought this would be a good alternative. I'm guessing VTT means Virtual Tabletop?

I'm aware of Fantasy Ground, but unless I'm misinformed, it seemed weird that even with a subscription, you couldn't Host for non-subscribed players, so I never bothered with it. I've done made some pretty complicated designs/maps with Roll, though. How do you think DPS compares to Roll20? From what I've seen of videos, they look very similar, which why I'm considering it.

The status of the product is concerning, but mostly I've seen people stating in the forum and reviews that they couldn't export/import or save, although like with any program, I know that tends to be based on the situation of the individual's computer, so I guess everything is in order here. I'll probably watch some videos before I make my decision, just to be sure, as a typical map for me takes like a dozen hours, well beyond the "grace period" for Steam, haha.

Yes VTT = Virtual Table Top.

I do not know much about the subscription - I purchased the Ultimate version which means anyone can connect to my game without a license using the Demo version. I dud use Roll20 a while but I am so glad I decided to invest in FG as it was way superior at the time. But Roll20 vs FG is a discussion that people are quite passionate about, so less said here!

Think of DPS as a map creator to use in other apps - there is no gaming automation in the software other than moving tiles.

There are tokens available in DPS and could be used as a crude offline table.

I can make a small basic map in about 2 mins - larger in about 5 mins using DPS. Adding objects will take longer depending upon the quantity and positioning.

If you want to discuss more you are welcome to come and join my DPS discord server:

I might be able to do a quick demo via a screen share.
