Are dinosaur hats integral to the gameplay experience?
I take my games somewhat seriously.

I don’t mind cartoony aesthetics or wacky high jinx if it’s consistent. I’ve just started playing two point hospital and I love that game! Loved the tongue in cheek humour of the bullfrog classics too, but I’ll always prefer Dungeon Keeper because it treated its darker atmosphere more seriously than the sequel or any spiritual successor.

Running a zoo full of colorful dinos! Love it! Looks more competent and complex than the You-Know-What Evolutions title too!

However, I fear you’ve lost me at the hats. That’s just one step beyond what I’m comfortable with. It’s not consistent with what I expect from a zoo. Makes my toes curls seeing them in the promotional material. It just feels so forced and tacked on. They’re dinosaurs! That should be enough.

Are the hats a required part of the gameplay? Are they mandatory to running a Saur-a-Park? Can I completely ignore them without the game bringing them up, or are they turned into a goal onto itself?

Really hope the devs haven’t and won’t put too much focus on them. Might as well play tf2 if the do.

You have to make a conscious decision to buy the hat and put it on the specific dino.

Some of them do provide buffs and traits to your dinos but by no means are they an essential thing to use.

Thanks Percival, and for your hard work. I was about to delete this thread when I noticed another one asking the exact same question a page onward, where you too delivered the answer.

I've made a thread in the suggestions forums and will leave it at that. I REALLY hope this game won't be ruined for my tastes by additional cutesy extras in 6-8 months time. The cartoony artstyle is wonderful, but I wouldn't like the devs to turn it into an actual cartoon rather than a management sim.

Best of luck to both the devs and to you moderating this forum until release!

I literally bought this game because I saw hats on dinosaurs in the trailer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I kind of thought the same as you but when I very quickly came to love my dinos and thought "They want hats! I shall give them hats!" Everything is about making the dinos happy. Happy Happy Dinos!

Hey devs, thanks for making those hats optional... people who like the idea can use them, others pass... BUT, for those others... can we have some other form of getting "buffs" for the dinosaurs? Like "titles"? For example: "furious Stego", or "cuddly Stego"? Or maybe just add the hats as buffs, but disable their visuality? I think, those, who are not into the hats, but still want the buffs, could be happy with such a solution, too.

You can already do that by putting the hat in the egg before it's born, I don't know if the effects are the same, pretty sure they aren't, but it's a thing already.

To build on that there is an unofficial sub Reddit which has a Google sheet about the effects the hats have on the eggs I believe

If there was a way to have those buffs without ruining my park with hats (Fortnite is already enough dumb-material to ruin gaming), that would be really cool.

Hats are used to edit the colors and traits of dinosaurs before they hatch. Putting hats on adult dinosaur has no effect except for looks. Some traits are useful, for example the friendly trait which allows different dino species to get along (namely carnivores and herbivores). So you can obtain the buffs without ruining your park with hats.

I wasn't sold on the hats until I put a cone of shame on a seismosaurus. I am now on board with hats.
