Is that intended, am I doing something wrong or have I come across a bug?

It was also hard to keep track of the damages on the fence as the red "health bar" disappeared really soon and I didn't find where to check the "exhibit health".

I've had the exact same issue. Finished the tutorial, put another dino in to make absolutely sure you need 600 area size per dino, saw that they became unhappy indeed and doubled their exibit. Both were happy.
Then they started smashing the fences.
It'd be interested to know what exactly caused the issue in my case. Did they start smashing because the game forgot I made them happy again? Will they always smash the fences, regardless of happiness? Was it because I suddenly changed the size?
