Sandbox in s&box

Huge fan of the vision Facepunch has for this game/platform/...thing?, and mad props to the trailblazing devs breaking as many technical boundaries as they have. From what I've seen everything has come such a long way so I can't stress enough I'm not doomposting here. If there's a team that can pull this off, it's this one. I also want to mention how consistent Facepunch has been with updating and improving their games over the years, and I have no reason to think that will change anytime soon. :)

I also recognise that this is an early developer preview, and does not represent the 1.0 build. Lots will change, get added and/or removed during further development. So best case scenario this post is outdated before too long.


... But damn to see the sandbox gamemode missing from s&box really put into perspective just how little else I was interested in interacting with s&box. I mean it's right in the name, right? I certainly do not represent the entire community, but I'm definitely not alone here.
I saw there were some fan-made versions of the sandbox gamemode but none seemed to work at the moment and honestly with any player-maintained gamemode its only a matter of time before it stops receiving support.

I understand s&box isn't Garry's Mod 2.
I understand that the sandbox gamemode is still fully accessible and continuously supported in Garry's Mod and the absence of it in s&box will not change that fact; but I really don't see why not including what is arguably the most accessible and interesting part of the 'behind the scenes' game engine experience (being the sandbox gamemode) and instead castrating it and creating smaller, less interesting methods of interacting with maps like "Walker" is anything the genernal public can get too hyped about.
... Walker? Yeah bro I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ love walking lmao can't get enough of it.

Like if I wanted to walk around a map with no HUD, I can still do that in the sandbox gamemode by using the camera or even using console commands. You can get as niche as you want in sandbox because it gives you the tools to create and customise your own gameplay experience on the fly.
I swear I saw "Walker" and I thought that surely that wasn't actually it, but... yeah. It's just walking. It even ♥♥♥♥♥ your FOV and greys out the settings option for you so you have even less control and agency over your gameplay experience.


Again, I really love what Facepunch is building here and I respect that they don't want to just retread old ground on a newer engine... I get it.
But the absence of sandbox is so unbelievably noticeable I feel like a huge part of how I interacted with the engine has just been chopped up into smaller, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pieces. I get that this is just a testing phase but you've opened the skibidi floodgates and you knew the piggies were gonna come oinkin in droves... so wheres our slop? The eggheads who can wrestle 1's and 0's might be able to make entire video games with the state s&box is currently in, but the other 99% of us ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ can't roll around in our slop? Bruh where's sandbox I got slop needs rollin in?

That's the whole point, YOU make the games and THEY make the engine, they can't just make the whole game a million times
