They're an oddity, that's for sure. The only engines that usually won't fit in smaller cars but the smaller (and lighter cars) are the only cars that might get decent performance with the rather insipid inline 6 engines.
I have had some fun with a Camira inline 6 engine in a Kanji.
however, on inlines you can have staged twin turbo setup which can be stronger setup then a blower! Adding a small and a big turbo you can get rid of turbo lag and get a rocket... very similar effect to blowers
so when you thinking inline vs v8, think staged twin turbo vs supercharged twin turbo (v8 does not have staged twin, so v8 blow both turbo at the same time, so you won't use small and big, but two big... where supercharger helps to get rid of the turbo lag
I did a bit of quick and dirty testing to get some numbers.
Kanji, money no object build. Euroa racing ignitions, Euroa racing sparks, Euroa 2 turbo manifolds, etc, etc.
This isn't about the times per se, but about the comparison between the times.
Camira L6 (the most powerful inline 6) with staged turbos Kanji and Euroa 2.
Peak HP: 443.
Peak torque: 686.
Drag: 9.70
Oval: 35.11
Panania SLX4
Peak HP: 548
Peak torque: 655
Drag: 9.32
Oval: 34.69
Walea SV6 (the cheapest V6) with 2x Euroa 2 turbo and a low profile supercharger SE.
Peak HP: 1408
Peak torque: 1731
Drag: 8.24
Oval: 31.73
Jingu CV8 (the cheapest V8) with 2x Euroa 1 turbo and a low profile supercharger SE.
Peak HP: 693
Peak torque: 2050
Drag: 8.28
Oval: 32.31
The only change between the inline and V runs was to change the diff from 2.50 to 1.90 because of the huge difference in torque.
I think that the inline 6 engines are insipid. The best inline 6 is beaten by a Panania inline 4 in all ways except for initial acceleration from 0 revs and it's spanked by all the V6s and V8s. It certainly isn't a rocket, even in a money no object build even in the lightest car it can be put in.
Am I missing something that would make it a rocket? It's OK for a low end racing car if you spend all the money on it and it does make a good noise, but it's no rocket.
the big blowers just too much for an inline... it can't really spin it up + hard to mount
