Battle Magic System : which game was the first ?

Since I've played Grim Legends 3, I noticed a lot of other Artifex Mundi's games (maybe even games from other publishers) also used the same magic battle system. Sometimes ponctually, sometimes it was as important as it is in Grim Legends 3. This system appears to be very popular among recent hidden object games. And Queen's Quest 3 uses it too for the battle against the bad teacher near the end of the game. I think I remember older Queen's Quest games already used it too.

So, I was wondering, to feed my curiosity : who was the first one to use it ? Which game was the first one to use this system ?
