How to stab Buggs in current version

I've only got the one card left to get - the one where you have to stab Buggs. There are several posts on here that are from April 2017 that don't seem to work. They list at least 2 different strategies that don't work now. I am always 1 apple short, when the guides say I should have 1 apple left to complete the needed action.

Was this changed in the game since April? What am I doing wrong? I've followed every guide here that I can find by searching...

I think the way I did it was to do the teacher's quest without buying the yoyo in the morning. When Jerome wants it talk to the teacher and she'll let you search the cubbies, take the knife. Buy the yoyo and continue on with the teacher's quest. At lunch don't give buggs the nugget stab him. What are you doing step by step? Maybe you are taking extra actions you don't need to take.

You can do Nugget's quest to do it. You use the exact amount of apples in morning time. Just do his quest normally, but after the Teacher reads the love letter, talk to Nugget (it won't consume your last apple) and grab the knife to use instead of the poisoned nugget during lunch. Then I just went with killing Monty and giving the lunch lady her glasses instead of the 2$. Shouldn't matter though which one you do.

Doesn't Buggs get removed if you start the teacher's quest?

If you do it correctly he goes back to class when you and Cindy show up at the Principal's office before homeroom.
