Which version is better?
I see this game is also available for 3ds, and I know that this pc version is split in half.

In what ways are they similar, and which is superior? I am torn since this version requires an awful lot of storage for an Otome game.

The mayor difference is that this new version have six new romances, and is an import of the PSvita version. The PS3 (and I think the 3DS too) version have the complete story, but "only" the original six romances.

I would wait a little bit if I were you. The PC port is a terrible mess and many people myself included are unable to get it to start. It keeps crashing.

There are also many who are able to run it without any issues whatsoever. Give it a shot. You can always refund it if you encounter any problems. As stated above, this version contains 6 additional routes. It's basically the same as the psv version but cheaper.

I've played both and it's hard to say which is superior right now. The 3ds one is a very long and complete game which gives it a big boost in my eyes. It also has some cute short stories that aren't in the PC version, though they're not significant enough to be a tiebreaker. The PC version has much better graphics since it's on a larger screen, new music, a beautiful new UI, new scenes not in the 3DS version, and, as mentioned, new routes. Detracting from this are the bugs, questionable translation at parts, and the story cutting off halfway (for now). Some of the new music is also rather immersion-breaking, though it all sounds nice. Metal in the Bakumatsu period?! I had to keep pausing to laugh in the middle of my first fight scene.

I personally say you should get the 3DS version first so you can experience the full story. Then, if you become a huge fan, you should get the PC version as well. I do see that effort has gone into the PC port and it was still very enjoyable to me even after being familiar with the story.

One last thing to note is that in the PC version most of the routes cut off before there's much romance. That doesn't matter to me who plays Hakuouki for the story and character development, but it may or may not be significant to you.

Thanks, since this is the first I've heard of this series I'll get the 3ds version first to see if I like it. Then if I do I'll get the pc version once it gets a few patches.

If you end up liking the 3ds one and wish to get Kyoto Winds, I would suggest waiting until the second half to the pc version comes out before investing in it. They might have a bundle deal, but also its not currently a 100% thing that we'll see the second half on steam. Obviously we hope that it will release but in your case I say better safe than sorry.
Makes sense. Though I wonder how they'll read how each person thinks of you in the second half? They might end up going the Seduce Me way of doing it and just let you pick who you were aiming for, not unless they're gonna treat the second half as dlc.

I would imagine they'll give you the option to start at high or low romance, as they do in the first half once you've cleared a route and go back to a scene you've already done. I haven't looked up the jpn version to say for sure but it would make the most sense.

I'm late to answering this, but I'd like to add that by far the best version of this game (that's localized) is the PS3 version. It has significantly more extras to it than the 3DS version in my opinion. Specifically, it has all the romantic OVAs that were done, which means extra scenes for every guy *for every chapter*. A lot of the new scenes that were added to Kyoto Winds (Shinkai, in Japanese) come from that extra material (called Memories of Love). The 3DS *does* have material that the PS3 version lacks, but that material can be found in the mobile port of the game (which has both that plus its own special scenes that are cute, but not extensive). (And the Steam version, I believe.)

The PS3 version (Stories of the Shinsengumi) is periodically on sale on the PSN but even regular price is no longer nearly as expensive as a new game ($20 maybe?). I note that it is the complete game, just as on the 3DS. In terms of more "extras", while it doesn't have the 6 extra routes like Kyoto Winds, it does have 2 chapters of "Memories" for each of Sannan, Shinpachi and Yamazaki. It also has Adventures 1 and 2, which are, quite honestly, the best DLC I've ever played. Hilariious!

Anyway, this doesn't help if you don't have a PS3 or PS4, but if you do then I HIGHLY recommend Stories of the Shinsengumi. Plus the art you get (for free!) for your PS3 is geat. :)

Just a thought. :Chibi_Saito:

Final note: I've had zero problems with the Steam version. Like @Yume , I'm a big Hakuouki fan, so having the story stop halfway isn't so bad - it's fun to have the new routes despite the questionable translation in some places. But something like the PS3 or 3DS version may be more fun if you're just getting into it - and there is a LOT of good stuff in the second half, no question.

Oh and one question - have you considered the mobile port? That is also the whole original game and it is voiced. It's better if you have a tablet or larger screen, ofc. But since you were looking at options I thought I'd mention it. :Chibi_Harada:

Well I don't have a PS4 (yet), and as a question how much space would it take up on a tablet? Cause I have a Kindle Fire tablet that I also use for music and videos so I want to make sure I have enough space to add games.

Hi - I was trying to find the info for you. It is a big game, about 600 Meg fully installed. If you do have the space for it, though, it's a really good first way to play the game (especially since a tablet gives you a decent screen).

I have one other suggestion for you. Otomate made the game Demon's Bond (Toki no Kizuna) as a part of the whole Hakuouki-verse. It was just localized last year (ish) for mobile. I played that one on my tablet as well (since that's the only localized version), and it's 99 Meg. It's got a lot of the historical flavour to it, but centered around the end of the Sengoku period (with Toyotomi and Tokugawa etc.). Hakuouki is about the fall of the shoguns; Demon's Bond is about the rise of the Tokugawa 260 years earlier and the Battle of Sekigahara.

One big downside: although Demon's Bond is localized, they didn't bring over the voice acting. That's part of why it's a smaller download. Anyway, if you enjoy or want to try Otomate (they do have pretty art and storylines), I enjoyed several of the routes in that game. The stories are about the demons who are the ancestors of the demons who show up in Hakuouki - and how they get sucked into the massive human was of *that* time period. :Chibi_Hijikata:

Welp, there's some more games to add to the pile that I need to start/finish. I do love historical otomes
