No, the protagonist have always been a female. Quite important for the story too.

I think the behavior of the love interest would change drastically if the MC was a male. I personally wouldn't mind that option (it'd be really interesting) but just changing the gender of the protagonist would cause major differences.

Not really. There are plot point reason the protagonist being female is important. Changing something like that would mean basically rewrite a lot of stuff and secondary characters's stories, not just the protagonist.
She mask herself as a male for some time, but is not exactly ideal if someone want to play a yaoi game instead of an otome.

For yaoi games, I know Heirs and graces, from Winter Wolves (I haven't played it myself, since I prefer otome). It's here on steam, and so others of their games that let you choose your characters, and have both straight and gay romances for both sexes. :)

You're right that there is no male character option. It would be great if there was, but it would require a lot of rewriting. Who knows what the future could hold though? It could happen! And the game does have lots of opportunities for same-sex shipping, lol. I'm convinced Okita is in love with Kondou, and Sen is in love with the MC. And there are many other ships that people have. Not the same thing as a male MC at all, but if you're queer like me you can find something to latch onto.

I can actually see Sen being in love with the MC, but as for Okita... I don't really see it that way. But everyone has their own opinion. :)

I think a male x male route (let's be real: it wouldn't be yaoi because yaoi implies sex (the term is an acronym for a phrase that translates to "no peak, no point, no meaning," after all!), and none of the official Hakuoki games are X-rated) would only ever happen in a Reimeiroku remake, where the central character is a guy (Ibuki Ryunosuke). Otherwise, it makes no sense at all for this story; the character being a female is actually crucial to the plot and interactions... and the time period, really.

Oh, if they ever translated Hakuoki SSL, being able to play characters besides Chizuru could be really cool! Imagine playing as photo-happy Okita and taking awkward pictures of Saito...!

Not to mention that homosexuality wasnt socially accepted in the 18th century so it would be scandalous (ingame-wise) and needs a lot of rewriting cuz they cant really just "make it acceptable" in the game's 18th century without losing authentity except if it would be purely "dating in secret" kinda thing

It could be cool in terms of the script, our character could know Kondo at the same time as Hijikata (at the dojo), be in the service of Kazama, be a ronin, be a demon and the bodyguard of Chizuru Yukimura (why I think to Sebastian Michaelis?), to be a magnificent courtier who confuses our samurai just with a brief smile ... there is a choice!

Mmh ... no romance for Kondô? I'm disappointed ... If Hijikata is similar to the moon, Kondô is similar to the sun, too bad it is not romantic, I really like Hijikata, but I love the joy of life and the smile of the commander of the Shinsengumi : D
