It's an odd game. It takes a long time to actually start getting tricky, and at all times it kind of feels like it's dragging out the game's length with how slowly new mechanics are introduced and combined. The character controls really awkwardly, especially on the sloped surfaces, and the isometric view, while nice to look most of the time, very often makes it WAY harder to actually solve the puzzles because there's rarely an easily-visible reference grid for heights and you can't spin the camera around to different angles to check heights or distances. The story is also hit or miss as it has no real dialogue, so you have to really just intuit what's going on based on context you pick up.

However, the presentation is generally pretty great, and the puzzles are fun thinkers particularly once you get to the trickier ones (and if you get stuck there's a hint system though it's sometimes less than helpful). None of the other issues (apart from the movement and isometric view) really get in the way if you really get into the groove.

This isn't normally my kind of game, but the few minutes I've played have already impressed me quite a lot. Where Cards Fall definitely tugs your emotions a bit - it's borderline melancholic, but it's the kind of nostalgic melancholy that is quite cathartic and relaxing.

The puzzles are engaging and challenging and the atmosphere is wonderful, I highly recommend it to players who struggle with anxiety - all of the game's features, combined, make the game quite distracting (in the best sense), and for me it was a pleasant break from my own thoughts.

Anyway, try it out! I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

I just bought the game... It is indeed a wonderful mechanic... Unfortunately, it's a pity that such beautiful drawings illustrate such an incomprehensible story! I don't appreciate long scenarios with a lot of dialogues or spreading feelings but there's a limit... A few subtitles would have been welcome... For now, storywise (or shall I say purposewise), it's a big void. "Jus play with your cards and don't try to understand"... It's a bit small...

Explore the imaginations and memories of a child in this coming-of-age story, where you’ll use cards to bridge gaps, step up to higher levels, weigh down floaty clouds, and so on. Upon finishing each level, you’ll be shown a small snippet of the protagonist’s life, and while at first I was very confused by the different characters and having trouble keeping them and the narrative straight, after about an hour I had a solid hold on what was happening, and was really enjoying the story.

While it isn’t clearly spelled out with words or voiceover, there are some noises akin to The Sims dialogue, just garbled nonsense that still put a smile on my face. And the gameplay, while simple in premise, can get a bit tricky, even early on in the game. You can place the moveable decks of cards that you’re given in each level, and once you’ve positioned them, you can stretch them across an open area, and expand them so your character can move toward the exit. Often, you’ll need to build, move, tear down, and then rebuild a couple times, or shuffle the different decks around, in order to reach your goal.

Each new area introduces a new deck to use, like the peaked roof houses that allow you to walk up a level, or new environmental hazards like clouds that need to be weighed down. There are over 50 levels, and I’m probably almost halfway through the game, but this is one that I’m looking forward to finishing sometime this week.

There is an unskippable cutscene after every single puzzle.
Sometimes more than 1; up to 5 at least.
The unskippable cutscenes are longer than the puzzles.
Their storytelling is pathetic: static "dialogue" in gibberish.
No actions, no words, no texts.
No idea what it's about. It's so bad that when an achievement pops up, its message is your only pointer into the story.
For example, one says "You bought fireworks for the party." I did ? Glad to learn that there's a party. Or not.
And not only is all this garbage unskippable, you have to walk manually and sluggishly out of each scene.

It's excruciating.
I forced myself to play for a while.

So what about the puzzles ? Do they redeem the game ?
Nope.
The mechanics are fine, but the implementation is awful, making the difficulty purely artificial.
First you fight with the controls, the selection of the decks, their movement.
The movement on slopes is even worse: you can't move laterally, you must climb back up, tentatively move to the next square, then slide back down again.
Finally you are stumped by miserable visibility: The isometric perspective doesn't let you know how high things are, how they connect or relate, where you can jump or climb or not.
And of course, there's no way to rotate, to get a sense of the layout.

Were I a complete misanthrope, I would recommend this game.
Instead, I'll tell you where cards fall: on their face, flat.

Like most puzzle games, you start with a basic skill and once you master that skill, a new skill is added which you must combine with the previous skill to advance to the next level and so forth. In `Where Cards Fall`, you start with the ability to build a basic flat card house. After a few levels, the sloped roof house is introduced followed by the 3-story tall house. Around this time, wind currents are introduced which will topple part of your house. These can be circumvented by the final house type, the steel house. There were definitely some levels where I was stumped and used the built in hint system. I like that the hint system is on a time delay which helps to prevent spoiling the level.

I really wish there was a way to skip the cut scenes. They were in a language unintelligible to me and without the achievement system giving some idea of what was going on, wouldn't have told much of a story.

Wonderful little puzzle game. Very satisfying to complete, and a neat story to tie it all up in.

Fun game, finished it quite quick. Probably should be a little cheaper.

I wish I liked this game but the story was pretty much impossible for me to follow and the puzzles towards the end didn't make me feel like 'oh yeah i got it!' when i got the solution and more so made me go 'are you f*cking serious'. Love TGB and their stuff generally but this was a miss for me unfortunately.
