Increasing military might level

How do you increase military might level please: I'm stuck at level 1 and the battles I've found are levels 3/4...

Help is much appreciated...

Just do the battle. You may lose, you may not but either way you gain experience and level up. If you do lose, it says game over but it just reverts to the world map where you entered the skirmish.

As you progress through the game, you'll be able to recruit newer, stronger units to join your team. You can straight up ditch your low-level units for the level 18+ they give you late game. Also, skirmishes either only give gold, kingsguilders, or (a few times) new citizens, so there's no real rush to do them immediately.
