City Building Tips
Allow me to preface this post by saying I am only in ch. 5 and my castle is level 2.
But I make about 185,000 KG per hour (only have capacity for 80,000).

As a general statement, if you are having difficulty with skirmishes focus on your barracks, its easy to lvl up and easy to research all of it early on.

Otherwise, your focus should be to maximize your KG per hour.

First goal is to expand your coffers.
Second goal is to increase your castle level.
Third goal is to increase your storage.

Increase KG by increasing influence, and to a lesser degree ensuring your citizens are placed in buildings that they are suitable for. So keep SPENDING your KG, don't hoard it early on, unless you need/want something specific.

Spend KG on whatever will yield the greatest amount of influence. Usually that means building all the available buildings, then upgrading them (even if you are not using them).

A few things you may want to prioritize:

Explorers Guild: I like brisk stroll (enables faster movement speed on the world map), but more importantly, researching storage expansion, stuff more stuff (it allows you to increase storage to 150)

Spellworks: Spring Lock (allows you to open all those blue chests you keep seeing), along with all the other spells you will need/find useful.

Institute of Innovation: reduce building & research cost (thanks Diviance & Genuine Prodigy)

Training Ground: this one is a personal preference, I like to maximize my character's ability to earn experience as soon as possible.

Early on, try to keep your game running so that you accumulate KG, return spend it. Rinse and repeat (a bit like compound interest). Do this early on and it will make your life easier later.

Enjoy. Feedback welcome.

Institute of Innovation and Institute of Higher Innovation are both good because they lower construction costs, research costs and upgrade costs.

The barracks exp upgrade doesn't really increase your exp gain by much (they have 2 for party, citizens and skirmishes for a total of 50%), and you don't need to focus on barracks upgrade if you're having problems with skirmishes. You need to just do skirmishes to level your forces, I've completed level 46 skirmishes with level 32 forces by just having one blue, red, green and archer and playing smart.

As someone who reached max level Kingdom and fully upgraded everything (I have the 70 million influence achievement) my personal choices of importance in no particular order are the following:

Spellworks - Spring Lock for blue chests, Rejuvenate to access 1 citizen recruitment and some shrines for tainted monsters, and whatever that speak to the dead spell for another citizen recruitment

Institute of Innovation and higher innovation - Offers research that reduce building cost, development cost, time, etc. Overall makes Kingdom building easier.

Explorers Guild - Forget the brisk stroll, it's all about increasing your store amount (goes from 20, 50, 150, 450, 900)

Resource camps (hunting, mining, farm, ranch, etc): Most end game resources will come from your Kingdom and it makes Swift Solution tasks, side-quests, item crafting/upgrading 1000x times easier when you can easily gather these items instead of constantly waiting.

Citizens level by completing research, gathering items at resource points, etc. You can also build and upgrade the sage's something (can't remember the second part of the name) to the left of your first dimensional lab that allows citizens to earn exp by just being assigned there.

You are right, I neglected the institute of innovation

I mistakenly wrote barracks, when I meant training ground

Thank you both

The amount you make sky rockets. By the end I was making over 1 million KG per hour and had coffers up that held up past that.

Yes, but I think I'm closer to 210,100 KG/hr now. So essentially my capacity fills up approximately every 30mins.

I am now on chapter 6 and have only 20 KG per hour.

On chapter 8, making roughly 800,000 KG an hour.
Way to gain more influence is build garden and pub. Those place will boost influence when you construct buildings and more influence = more KG you will get.
But getting there isn't easy..

It sounds like you have been neglecting your "castle building"
