I didn't see any trailer or information of any contents that connect to 1, so I don't think it has huge connect.

From what I've seen, the second game takes place many years after the first, long after Oliver and the original crew have all passed away. It's revealed that Evan is a descendant of King Tom, who ruled Ding Dong Dell in the first game. However, you don't need to play the first game to play the second. The story is a completely different one, so you don't need to know what happened in the first game.

There are many references and some connections but not a direct connection to the first one in terms of story and events.
The closest you come to a direct connection is that there's a small story of how the protags from the first saved the world, except what they did is completely different from the actual first game.

There are some details, referencing to the first part, but nothing, that makes it necessary to play the first part for this, more something like "you'll recognize it, when you've played the first part and it's maybe a nice memory", not more.

But story is totally indepentend, so no real need to play the first Ni No Kuni before this.

I just started my ps3 some days ago with ni no kuni 1 :)
