Each weapon has it's own Zing (I think thats what it's called) charge, as well as damage and status effects. As you use a particular weapon in combat, the Zing will gradually reach 100%. If you use a combat skill while holding a 100% Zing weapon, it will discharge the Zing and increase the power/effects of the combat skill.
There are 3 controls for weapon-changes:
Manual - You manually change your weapons with Left Trigger and cycle through them (recommended for experienced players only).
Semi-Automatic (Default) - Recommended for newbies. I believe with this one the game switches to your highest Zing weapons in order to maximize skill damage, then once you use it up, it switches to the next applicable 100% charge weapon. You can still use LT to change the weapon whenever you want.
Fully Automatic - This weapon COMPLETELY automates the weapon changing, and disables the ability to change your weapons manually with LT.
In short, yes, your characters do change weapons, and yes, you are supposed to have 3 melee weapons and 1 ranged weapon equipped at all times to be efficient.
Furthermore, For 1 weapon, when you 100%, you have to use skill wisely because of reduce to 0%.
I used 3 the first time playing then realized why am i using 3 weapons when only 1 is the strongest. After switching to just 1, i was having much more fun, easy to control, and always using the best. This way i upgrade 1 strongest weapon and use that one, why have 2 weaker more useless weapons in the que.
Again it is fine if you have 3 weapons generally of equal power, but for me,nope sorry i enjoyed the game much more just having and using my strongest weapon.
But you're not taking into account the special effects gained from using a weapons at 100%. Thats why you switch. Im pretty sure theres even a switching bonus
