After over 4 years and 2k+ hours I have finally decided to review this game. The people I have met have truly changed my life. Now I just have Stockholm Syndrome.

A melting pot of the mentally disabled.

Believe it or not, I am a professional historian in real life. One with a PhD about French history and working in a cultural institution. As you can imagine, I was really excited about this game. Despite my busy life, I'm playing video games to dwelve into the past, to be immersed for a few hours in this history that I love so much. What is a romantic like me thinking of Holdfast: Nations at War?

It is obviously early days for this game and many features are missing. As it is, we are dealing with the infantry and the navy, but horses and mobile artillery are absent. This is the rule of Early Access Games, something that we signed for when we bought the game. I am pleased to say that Holdfast is already enjoyable. A typical siege battle will let you chose between the French and the British, the latter always being in the attacking seat. While the lack of discipline of a few players is sometimes a problem, the large amount of role-playing fellow soldiers is very often enjoyable. It is not rare to have a good officer screaming orders in an early 19th century fashion while the men shout taunts at the enemy. The last minutes are usually tense, with the French holding to their last precious tickets. Often, a round ends in a large British charge with a bayonet slaughter near the French flag.

Navy battles are also good fun and feel as a different game. After selecting your class, ranging from a sailor to the captain or a violonist, you have a role to fulfil. The crew will usually make sure that guns are loaded and ready to fire while riflemen wait anxiously to shoot at enemy sailors. You need to be patient to enjoy naval battles. Sometimes, the captain will sail for a long time, trying to avoid action in order to follow the best course. But suddenly, the orgy of violence kicks in and there is nothing better than being fired at from two directions and seeing bodies of your fellows flying in the airs.

As you can see, I like this game very much. It is, however, not perfect. Early Access issues aside, maps are not diverse enough and lack the historical touch. I would very much like the team to work on real locations. Why not start with Hougoumont farm or a Spanish village? How about a French city to match the invasion of France in 1814? These ideas could give a breath of fresh air to the gameplay. There are also minor historical details that could be improved but this, unless you're a history nerd like me, won't bother most.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this game. There is nothing like holding the line while the French are melting on you, and having the lad next to you screaming 'come on, you cheese-eating surrender monkeys'!
