But yeh melee is not intuitive. It is also not (I anticipate calls to the contrary) broken. It's true that you will sometimes be killed by a guy who is "nowhere near me" but that's most often down to lag. And in many cases it was the guy you didn't see behind you that actually stabbed you. But as I say many will disagree. Preferring to assume they are melee gods and if someone killed them there must surely be something wrong with the game.
Having to face down to swing up (low attack) is hard to master since melee seems to be defaulted to high attack. Low block seems similarly difficult compared to high block. And going to side block when you meant to high block is just about the most embarrassing way to die in the game.
Swinging right to left is easy, especially if you learn the dark arts of spinning and breaking blocks and attacks. You can speed up the attack like this. Swinging the other way is much slower, hard to use the break block trick and even more counter intuitive. If you are attempting to spin into the attack your hand will be moving to the right, which is off the edge of the table for most of us. Swinging attacks left to right (high or low) are doable, but they are always much slower and can leave you vulnerable.
Go onto and empty server and practice attacking a tree.
