Wasn't it advertised as that? When the japanese game was advertised they said It takes place in an alternate universe, unrelated the Hopes Peak.

It's not in an alternate universe. It doesn't have anything to do with the others, though

It is set in the same universe as the Hope's Peak arc, but long after its conclusion. In theory, the plot should be completely unrelated to the Hope's Peak arc since that's how Kodaka described it, but he's an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ madman (in a good way) so who knows what will happen.

This game does take place in an AU it was advertised that way in Japan a lot of people who do not know this in America are super confused.

Short answer : Yes, it is set after the anime.
But this game has absolutely no connection to the other games in the franchise up until the very end which i won't explain how for obvious reasons
