It's easy to say "go play the previous games", and if you have the time/money I would highly recommend it. However, you could also just watch a playthrough online or read a synopsis if you don't have the money for both previous titles.
I'd rather let Monokuma gouge out my eyes than watch the anime. The unfinished "abridged" series was great while it lasted though.
Danganronpa 3 is... meh. The Despair arc is quite good but the Future/Hope was some what of a let down with them cheaping out on at least one character death (and also for not confirming Hina x Makoto, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Get that girl some doughnuts Makoto!!).
And also, a lot of the reason they didn't make an anime out of DR2 is because the entire premise is of being a game within a game so it wouldn't translate that well in an anime. Just like DR3 was made into an anime instead of a game BECAUSE it was a story that also wouldn't translate well as a game.
You should play the games in this order:
Danganronpa 1: Trigger Happy Havoc.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
Danganronpa AE: Ultimate Despair Girls.
Then you read the Danganronpa: Zero novel.
Then you watch the Danganronpa 3 anime.
Then you finally play Danganonpa V3 :D
(If you don't want to play the AE game or watch the anime or read the novel, you can always look up summaries on Youtube or whatever).
And for me, the games are more than worth it, they're truly, truly amazing.
(And please don't watch the Danganronpa: The Animation anime instead of playing the first game, you will get an amazing experience the game, and you won't find that experience anywhere else).
