Question regarding in game timer

So from my understanding there is a timer in the game. I tend to watch a lot of television while I game, which means my games often sit idle while running. Does the timer run, even while doing nothing in the game? Or is it only engaged, when the character is moving or interacting with things?

It's running constantly, so beat the game quickly, or death by shadows, if you can't beat them.

time proceeds only when traveling or resting. idling is fine so long as you're not doing either of the previous things

Yeah, I noticed the timer only goes when you're actively playing the game. Traveling, fighting etc.
