Is progress going backwards or something?

I'm looking at a 2018 let's play right now, and it's looking very different from what I'm playing in 2020. All the changes to everything - interface to level design - just seemed to be better in the 2018 version. This is confusing me. At first I thought I was going crazy, but this LP confirms it. Hopefully the 2018 LP will get worse as he progresses beyond the first rooms.
