For the concierge, avoid being near him when he has the torns shield, jump above his wave attack, roll when he jumps towards you and you will be fine.
If you are not confident with your melee, get ranged weapons and/or traps, focus your stats towards one colour (and pick items of that colour), those are the basics.
Can I avoid malaise by not getting hit? I did not know that not getting hit is important.
The enemies also do more damage.
So even without malaise, not getting hit (as much as possible at least) is important since it allows you to survive longer (after all, you get damaged quite a bit by enemy attacks).
Dodging gives you a small invulnerability, many attacks can be avoided by moving away or jumping over them as well and shields allow you to block (taking less damage) or parry (no damage taken and damaging the attacker).
And if you kill enough enemies without getting hit, the game rewards you for it at the waiting zones so it is worth it to try.
There are also a fairly varied arsenal to unlock and use, you will probably find something that works for you and enjoy yourself.
For example, working with traps as your main source of damage, mostly avoiding being anywhere close to enemies is a completely valid way to play, there are various weapons and mutations to complement that style too.
Similarly you can have fun with various grenades or elemental effects.
The devs work pretty hard to try to make all of the equipments viable, from the most basic to the most technical.
The Concierge is the easiest boss to prevent from doing anything of significance, and he also has a pretty merciful moveset. The Wolf Trap is great for preventing him from cornering you (and also for getting behind his back, where you can spam attacks without fear of retaliation until the Wolf Trap breaks), and I don't know if it's still any good against bosses, but the Crusher made it even harder for him to do anything
You might want a ranged weapon, too, just so you have an option to inflict damage while his lacerating aura is up. Maybe that's just me being an impatient bastard, though, and you'll have to worry about ammo in the case of most of the weapons that can hit him without the risk of taking contact damage in the process
Not to be a douche, I beat megaman 1 and 2 and even Rygar on the nes back in the day so there's that. I beat him on run 4 blindly using wolf traps, the fire ranged weapon and some random sword. The traps are the key imo and if you had a freeze grenade as well it'd be even easier.
Jump the fire, stay away from the red and white circles when they appear but he should be trapped most of the time anyway. Just keep him on fire and trapped and stay away.
Just practice. I highly recommend playing old platformers like megaman and metroid and stuff (nes versions only) to really get used to that kind of game. Plus they are fun and when you beat them you feel great ;)
Don't play Rygar. Just don't.
I don't remember the specific state of the game when this thread was posted but the initial difficulty has changed a lot over the years, from a pretty tough experience in the early stages of early access to what it is now (relatively easy to get through, serving as an introduction towards the higher difficulties).
Of course it doesn't mean that the first defeat of any boss loses value, beating him on your first try is pretty nice indeed.
