Off-color scrolls, yay or nay?
Self-explanatory title, but to describe it further:

Is it worth it to grab off-color scrolls to get that health bonus once you have some in your color of choice? I've seen some polarizing opinions on this. Some say don't deviate, other say grab them all and choose the highest health bonus if your color's not there, some impose limits on grabbing them to not buff the enemies too much, etc.

Personally, when I started out, I didn't deviate at all and grabbed all the scrolls of power I could see, only to realize I buffed the enemies too much and my weapons slowly became less effective. Then I tried grabbing one or two off-color scrolls and my health decreased less and less from mistakes.

So, what do you guys think?

(It also helps separating your opinions based on new player vs veteran player experience, since I'm still new in the game lol)

Enemies don't scale with scroll count and haven't for many years.

So yeah, either put it in the one that will give you the most health, or focus on one off-color so you can have much more powerful Legendary weapons. (Legendaries scale with the TWO highest colors instead of just one.)

Wait, they don't? i thought that they did to balance out the increase in damage with enemies' health/damage. At least, that's what I heard from videos and guides.

So then, how does the game scale those things if they're not dependent on those? Through how many biomes you have traveled?

Also, never thought of alternating in 2 colors instead of evening both off colors, that's a great tip, thx :D

I'm pretty sure that enemy damage depends solely on how far into the game the biome you're in is. I recall actively testing this with a friend of mine, where he seemed to take about twice as much absolute damage in the Toxic Sewers as in the Prisoner's Quarters regardless of stats, if I remember correctly

So I typically go into one of two modes of stat assignment: either way, I sink as many stat boosts as possible into my primary damage stat, and with the remaining stat boosts, I either pick whichever stat gives me the biggest health boost or put most or all of them into a single other stat

For instance, if I don't feel like trying my luck with a legendary weapon for whatever reason, or health is just really important to me this run, I'll typically focus on Survival, then alternate between Brutality and Tactics depending on which one the level-up screen says gives the most health relative to my current max health. But if I am counting on getting a legendary whose damage is worth boosting into the stratosphere, then I'd probably pick Survival as my main stat, just like last time, but invest everything else into Brutality

Now this second strategy can give massive returns (as in by the time I'd gotten to High Peak Castle during a 4 BSC Damned run earlier today where I focused on Brutality first and Survival second, my legendary Repeater Crossbow had a critical damage that almost matched that of a Cursed Sword I found), but forgoing a stat entirely can result in losing out on a ton of max health. Therefore it might be worth it to deliberately spend a few scrolls on whatever you're not focusing on once you're sure that nothing could ever possibly stand up to your outrageous damage output (you'll definitely lose a lot of damage, but if you're already one-shotting anything short of a boss, then an additional 50% HP will probably be the bigger boon)

Ahhh, that's immensely helpful then.

In the past, I ignored any scrolls that didn't include my "main" one, but I soon realized that the more scrolls, the better anyways. I was really curious about that damage scaling since, when I first began in 0BC, many guides and even some videos listed not getting too many scrolls (or at least, not the ones in your category) so the enemies won't become as buffed later in the run.

In relation to the legendaries though, I saw that they're doing an overhaul on how they scale with scrolls and their affixes. Would that same dependence on two types of scrolls for scaling work even after the patch? (Or even better, is the patch even going to include that or keep the old way thanks to feedback?).

As for me, I always leaned on Brutality thanks to the snappier, more faster weapons, plus parrying in a dime just in case a projectile or attack comes to my way at the last second, all while dealing with RNG just to get good skills and synergies (heck, that's how I got to 2BC thanks to the Spite Sword / Face Flask and Vengeance combo). Maybe my lack in HP is why I'm always dying so fast XD

But yeah, this is good info man. thx :keropink:

Oh ♥♥♥♥, I'd completely missed the upcoming legendary rework until now. Just read about it, and it seems that dual scaling is about to be removed, so everything I mentioned about the primary + secondary stat assignment strategy will go out the window the instant that rework enters a main patch. You'd better enjoy your ridiculously high legendary damage values while you can, because they'll seemingly be replaced with unique affixes that might not necessarily be good

Also, if you want to run Survival, but don't want to lose out on relatively fast weapons, you can use the War Spear. I haven't used Flawless yet, but it sounds like it's relatively fast, too. Armadillopack (which is a Survival mutation, but is extremely useful in general) also lets you parry on a whim because it basically upgrades your dash
