While you are still learning the game and the zones, the mutation that revives you is pretty nice, after that it will depend on what stat you want to focus on and how you will play that run.
So try to have runs focused on different things while trying out weapons, powers and mutations.
After a while, you will know pretty well what you want from your run by the time you reach the end of the first zone, based on your avaiable choice of starter weapons and what you found on the way.
It will revive you once, and that should give you a better foundation to learn the game.
Besides that one, I mostly always chose the same 2 mutations, no matter the build, when on a new save file, because some are just more beneficial than others on a fresh save.
- Vengeance (red)
gives you time to breathe whenever you take damage.
- Tranquility (purple)
provides a nice damage boost for any ranged attacks, which I highly recommend to use in the beginning, since the default unlocked ranged gear is just very powerful (speaking of Frost Blast, Electric Whip, Throwing Knives or Multi Bow) and can carry you through your first few runs.
Given that I found & unlocked the following, I situationally also use them instead of YOLO:
- Frostbite (green) when using ice-based gear.
- Extended Healing (green) for bosses, provides damage boost when healing.
- Disengagement (colorless) another variation of a life saver.
I kinda got the idea from reading it that it would be useable once per run,
but it seems that it was only usable once, ever.
Like I got it in one of my first few runs to try it out and ever since then it has been locked every time I go to the mutation screen.
For the entire rest of your run it will not be pickable anymore - althought it still shows in the mutations list.
