Dead Cells
[CURSE] Cursed sword
I was having some runs for fun an thinking about the curse. All in all, when you start to gain experience you start to see the curse and the cursed thingy differently..

Here I'll focus a bit on the cursed sword which is.... well not tha good of a weapon. I tried a dozen of runs with it to really gauge it and I think it fails on two points:
  1. As a challenge weapon, it's not rewarding enough
  2. As a regular weapon, the permacurse, even when experimented is a bit too much :/

So here are some suggestion to try to think of a way to tackle that

Features change Approch
While the huge damage boost is fine for a cursed sword, the insta-death is a bit too much. What I suggest is not to remove the huge backslash of the sword,
Of the backslashes i could think of, here are my 3 favorites:
  • Blood Thirsty: The sword is bloodthirsty and thus consume the player blood each at a X amount per sec (does it even got blood?). The only way not to become dry-dead is to kill some foes in order to stop the effect. A bad point to this effect is a bit like the darkness in the dark sepulchre, and itmay makes this sword feels a bit to powerful in crowded areas
  • Fire Emblem Like: From time to time, or with each strike, there is a chance for the blade to deal some damage to the player. It"s impredictable and that makes it sooo good.
  • No healingThe sword blocks all healing (even in the collector's room). That allow enemies to deal their regular damage, but if one think about it, it forces you to maintain and entire HP bar for the whole run, it exiting, and is a nice challenge

Reward Approch
Another approach for the weapon is to let it as a challenge run weapon. But make it more rewarding, like a +1 level on a stat? Or a scalling +X%power? A special achivement for surving multiple level with? Or anything else?

The problem with cursed sword is more that not getting hit is not up to you sometimes. You can just get really really bad enemy placements and just die. As a weapon it's basiclly one shot something before they on shot you. Only weapon that actually benefits greatly from collector upgrades since it already has a really high base damage.

This. The camera panning is totally off and enemy placement is very random. When playing with the CS you could die and it's not even your fault.

I've asked for a better camera movement but got ignored along with every other suggestion I've made so far.

To see what I mean you can do the following:
1. Find a long road and move from left to the right without using the camera control. Your character will be placed slightly right of the middle of the screen which is very bad.

2. Now do the same again, walk from left to the right but this time also hold your right analog stick to the right direction.

This is actually the camera movement that is needed if you do not want to run into enemy attacks but as I said, this request got ignored. It was annoying having to navigate the left AND right analog stick. Now with the speedbuff mechanic it's even worse.

I can't remember that I ever picked up the cursed sword unless I want to do a cursed run.

Yea I end up pushing the right stick a lot when I do exploring since camera has some really bad tracking habits agreed.
I definitely agree. It'd be great if the weapon was reworked to still be harmful to the player, but not be as black-and-white, because it's generally just never a smart or rewarding weapon to play with. It doesn't help that it's otherwise a pretty boring, generic sword.
The funniest thing is that a 4x dealt 2x taken on any other sword deals more damage than a cursed with way less penalties.
