Game Requires OpenGL 3.2; How to update?
I bought Dead Cells today super hyped to play it but when i attempted to launch it, it gave an error message saying "unable to create an OpenGL context for your Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 video card. OpenGL 3.2+ is required, please update your driver." How do I solve this issue? Do I need to buy hardware to solve this, or can I install a software update? Please help!

You could try getting the latest driver for your Intel HD Graphics from Intel's website. If you have it and it still doesn't work, than your current GPU simply does not support OpenGL 3.2 or higher.

The devs are trying to get a DirectX version out in the future, which should be supported by Intel HD graphics, but until then, only a hardware upgrade (dedicated Graphics Card) can help you.

In other words. Using 'Integrated Graphics' from an Intel CPU - won't work for this game.
Buy a graphics card, and you should be okay. Mostly.
I've got a nice system. And this game will NOT run faster than 1fps.

Now if I use a modified opengl32 file to circumvent the issue, I can play at 10fps - but I also lose all STEAM overlay capabililty.

Long story short, they have a LONG way to go for acceptable graphic wrappers.

I'm having a similar problem as the original poster. I'm really not that great with technology, so I don't have a clue what to do or look for to try your solution. Would you be willing to help again?

Another friend has at least confirmed that I'm running an NVIDIA graphics card and not the Intel Integrated Graphics, so he doesn't think that's my problem. Nonetheless, I still get the error: "...unable to create an OpenGL context for your Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 video card. OpenGL 3.2+ is required, please update your driver."

@theANdROid: Sounds like you got a dedicated graphic card (Nvidia) and an integrated one (intel HD). If that's indeed the case, you need to force the Nvidia by default in the control panel..

Here is how to do that: Right click on Dead Cells in your steam library, then property, then browse local files. You should see the deadcells.exe appears in your file Explorer.

Right click on deadcells. Click on "change default graphic processor". Nvidia control panel should open. Click on "add" and on deadcells if it is there, otherwise, browse to find it (should be somewhere like C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Dead Cells).

Then "add selected program". Choose "high-performance Nvidia processor" under: "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:", then "Apply".

Hope it works.

Thanks!

I followed your instructions, but unfortunately I get the same message:
"The application was unable to create an OpenGL context for your Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 video card. OpenGL 3.2+ is required, please update your driver."

My friend said my computer should be compatible with OpenGL, but didn't know how to determine what version I had, or how to upgrade it. Is that something you (or anyone) knows how to do?

Or perhaps it's still something with the graphics card, considering that I forced the Nvidia and the error message still says something about the Intel card?

Hello,

That's quite unusual indeed. You can see which video card is installed on your computer by accessing the Device Manager[www.computerhope.com] and looking under "Display adapters.". Could you tell me what you see?

In the Device Manager, in the list of various things, if I click the drop down arrow for "Display adapters" it shows two things. The first is "Intel(R) HD Graphics 520" and the second is "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M" I'm not at all a techie, but if I double click them the information in the properties window that opens up seems to be standard and nothing sticks out.

I'm not sure what changed or when, but the game seems to be working now. Something inspired me to try once more last night even though I expected the same as always, and instead it actually started up and seemed to play without a hitch. Whether it was something you did or not, thanks for the help! I hope it will continue to work! ;-) The game is pretty sweet too, so thanks for that as well!

Glad to hear that,

Have fun!
