when does the game saves?

Before leaving early access, the game saved anywhere I was when I quit, but now I have lost part of my progress twice because the game didn't save part of my progress. When does the game save now?

Most of the time right where u stop the game. But a couple times I beat a boss then went to the next level and stopped and when I restarted.. I was back before the boss? So, in the end... I don’t know :|

The auto-save is at the start of each level (during the animation where you enter and the door closes behind you), and it saves when you die or when you select "quit" from the pause menu.
If you use alt+F4 to close the game it won't save (this is used for save scumming if used a bit before dying).

I always close the game selecting quit, never with alt+F4, still have lost some progress.
