Didn't get a boss cell

I completed a run and got the homonculus rune, then completed another run, which is supposed to reward the first boss cell, but I didn't get it. I thought the Hand of the King is supposed to give a BC when you defeat him. am I missing something?

You should get the first BC when you kill him for the first time. You get both the homunculus rune and the first BC will drop which you can pick up.
Then you can get the second BC by playing the game on 1BC difficulty. If you play on 0BC again he will not drop a BC.
To get the 3rd BC, you must beat him at 2BC difficulty.
Etc.
Except to get the 5th BC you must defeat the Giant

I didn't get it when I defeated him the first time. So, will he never drop it again?

If he doesn't drop a boss cell, then you likely picked it up the first time. When you restart the run, you see a horizontal glass tube below all the flasks in the starting room. You can interact with the tube and enable the first BC, provided you didn't open the door (or break it) on the right of the room.
Alternatively exit to main menu and click on Save Slot 1. Is there a boss cell image at the bottom of that save slot?

Turns out I DID get it. When I activated the tube, it said "No Boss Cells," so I assumed I didn't. I didn't realize I could press left and right to change the active boss cell. ~_~

Yeah, the screen that comes up is not very clear. There are arrows on the sides to change the number of cells, but it's also hard to tell... unless you use keyboard. So, that's something.

It really needs to be fixed a little, since this is not an uncommon issue that comes up.
