What are blueprints and how can I achieve their weapons?

I've collected various blueprints (and probably lost them while dying bloody deaths). What can I do with them?

Once you pick up a blueprint, you need to make it out of the current level alive and give it to the Collector in the "in-between-levels-hub". Once you give it to him, it will appear in his list of items you can unlock. Then, once you spend enough cells on that item to unlock it, it will have a chance of dropping in future runs (and it will also drop right then and there to try out immediately).

You do have to make it out of the level alive though. If you die while carrying a blueprint, you lose it.

Are the weapons that spawn at the beginning of the level also part of that?
