Do not spend any money on gear or affix-rerolls before finishing the Sanctuary or the Stilt Village - save ALL your gold to be able to purchase potions from food shops. They are very expensive, you're barely able to buy both.
Also, feel free to get all cells you come across. Going for a glass cannon build is a viable choice here. You have to finish fights quickly. Staying in one for too long is what you need to avoid. Prioritize ranged enemies first especially the Inquisitor and the Bombardier.
Finish boss fights as fast as possible - you don't want to accumulate malaise-points. Careful with the Lacerating aura of the Concierge! As for the fast attacks of the Time Keeper, I barely even use my weapon and mainly just spam skills while fully focus on dodging and parrying.
Money situation is better, if you're going trough Prison Depths: always enough for 2 potions and occasional weapon purchase in shop. Also, better gear level to prepare for later stages.
But there's also more opportunities to take extra damage that way. Maybe, going trough Prison Depths, actually, increased time needed to beat 4cells for me.
you need to make sure you're getting the correct items for whatever build you're running early to keep you from wasting potions early. ALSO the earlier you purchase items from shops, the cheaper they are. so shopping earlier is cheaper in the long run and can set you up to hopefully not need to buy as many potions.
the #1 thing that helped me out was prioritizing finding an invisibility necklace. if you have that, it lets you scout the level to grab cursed chests so you can choose where you will burrn off the curse. it also helps prevent you from being in a scenario where you find a cursed chest at the end of the level but don't have the enemies to end the curse. a nice perk to invsibility is that it makes it MUCH easier to cheese elietes by shooting your head onto them. if you're invisible, they just sit there and take it until they're dead.
getting ALL cursed chests helps a lot by way of the damage boost from scrolls.
second priority for me is getting a "gold cells" necklace. this gives you a lot of breathing room with your gold so you can pick up / upgrade items as needed. this also makes it much easier to get stat boosts from equipment. ideally you want invisibility AND gold cells, but i pick up gold cells until i find invisibility.
also for certain active abilities, you can just avoid upgrading them altogether. for instance, stun grenade and ice bow don't get dramatically better between level V and level X. just get an S or ++ item early in these instances and reroll for +scrolls and necessary bonuses. (extra stun duration in the case of stun grenade, pierces enemies in the case of ice bow)
in lower difficulty settings you're struggling to hit the damage reduction 75% cap. keep in mind, though, that on BC4 necklaces dropped toward the end of the game have 30% damage reduction. meaning you only need to find an addition 45% between other items to hit that cap. if you're using an ice bow for your off-hand, it can almost single-handedly put you at the cap. my point is that you don't have to worry as much about prioritizing damage reduction in BC4, especially since you have to worry about managing malaize much more than regular damage.
one last trick is running one build for the majority of the game and switching when necessary.
for instance, i run duplex bow, ice bow, wolf trap, and stun grenade... then after clearing high peak castle, i will switch to a legendary melee weapon if one dropped, or buy the best frantic sword i can from a shop.
if i was lucky enough to get a gold soul amulet OR i saved my money through the game, i can easily reroll the sword before the boss fight and swap out my mutations for melee mutations.
I still hold on to the gold saving advice of mine, as after the 2nd food shop, you'll get so much gold, that you can easily purchase anything later on. That's when I tend to buy gear if needed. Those will be high-tier items and with the amount of cash you'll have, you can buy whatever you want, as much as you want - gold will be pouring in from the second half of the game you'll be buying stuff regardless if you missed the potions, because that 200k you saved will mean nothing when even if you buy potions, you'll have around 800k in the Castle anyway.
Best thing is to try it for yourself and see what works best for you.
There is also a great amulet that freezes anyone that hits you, so immedately stops them from continuing their attaks. That works wonders in the unfortunate case if you get hit by the combo of the Slashers or Cannibals or whatever enemy.
tip: the ossuary is the safest place to experiment with ice bows!
edit removed experiment!!!
I understand that you bought the game, about the same time I started a minimal new save... I have been playing since launch and have about 80% chance of + quality items! They have a higher base damage and resistance...
Tip? icebows and sentries may make the palace trivial!
Question were sentries removed from the game?
Tip: I can confirm that archers still drop icebows!
Tip: I just my first workable icebow in my new save!
Question have you ever seen sentries or were they removed from the game?
Also added tips to last post!
thanks!
