I, like many people from EA, are unfortunately plagued with a large number of items that I unlocked to see what they were like, before very quickly realising they suck so badly you're probably better off unarmed than trying to use them.
Edit to add: shields can really shine against certain enemies and bosses. Lots of people avoid them, but they've definitely got their place.
In my opinion, they are most effective for killing enemies (including elites) by shoving them off of ledges and making them take fall damage. And it can be more effective than you think: I had one quite surprising instance in which I kicked a Bombadier off of a ledge in the Promenade, and he fell on an elite zombie and managed to one-shot it.
I just wish the game didn't actively punish you for unlocking more stuff
I've been playing for a year + and with the foundry update (which added parry) sheilds can be OP as ♥♥♥♥. Especially with mutations.
