2. Parrying the cannonball is great when im afraid to close in due a pack of enemies;
3. The torch can help you lots if you arent confident in any of the above, its a great weapon and one of my favorites.
Thats what i usually do, since im not skilled enough to use offensive utilities i usually roll with Bangs and Ice bombs that also could help you a great deal.
I personally don't like the shields or the torch.
I guess theres many ways to deal with em, Just varies with playstyle.
It gets amazingly high Damage per shot on tactic-focused runs
The turrets in the game for some reason do not cause the cannonballs to explode on contact and the cannonballs can just roll right past them before exploding. Heavy Turrets work especially well since their shots stun the Pirate Captains and they don't have a dash to get in range like the Slashers. Heavy Turrets win that contest 8/10 times. Ceiling Turrets are just completely untouchable to most enemies so carrying one is just an instant-win provided there is a ceiling.
Using weapons and abilities that inflict a status effect also work very well. For example if you happen to have some Throwing Knives, purely as an example, then you only need to clip them a handful of times to deal damage over time and kill them. Just wait for it to run out and then go in to throw another one before dodging away.
The War Spear is particularly good in this area because you rarely find a Captain alone. Roll through their bomb so that you are JUST close enough that they'll try to melee you. If you were quick enough then the War Spear will land first, hit several enemies for crits that'll stun them consistently, and kill them relatively easily.
These are the easiest methods and anything else pretty much requires you to be good enough that you wouldn't be encountering much trouble with the Pirate Captains anyway.
But on serious side stay as far away from them as possible and use the area to your advantage.
Their cannonballs have really wonky hitboxes, sometimes they won't explode when you are right on top of them, sometimes they'll explode on other side of screen, so try to stay away from that attack as much as possible. If you are near them they'll do a quick slam combo that you should roll away from. The way I deal with them is stomp on them and burst them down quickly before they have any chance to attack.
Sorry for the late response. But im not used to bows beside that shotgun x-bow, infantry bow and ice bow.
The utilities i ran is the same from what i said on my first post.
I still heavilly recommend the torch, its a easy weapon that helped me learn how to kite (im still far away from git gud). Ice bow can help you with some cc specially when it comes with the pierce perk.
Infantry bow helps you with positioing and helps getting rid of most of your fear when playing the game (at least it was for me).
I dont know if you unlocked the Impaler but its still one of my most beloved weapons in the game because its reach.
I played the game a good ammount when it just came out and only went back to it 2 weeks ago so i cleaned my save and im unlocking everything again.
Just keep at it, a week ago i was barely finishing a run and now i can reliably finish 1 boss cell run and somewhat pull some 2 boss cells runs.
