Malaise?
I started to notice some bars appearing in the castle on normal. Ive heard of a new debuff. Could someone explain it?

Aside from damage, you get a stack of malaise every time you get hit by one of the three elites that hold keys in Castle. If the bar of malaise reach maximum - you die. So don't get hit by those elites.

I see. Good to know.

Actually, you don't "die" outright. You do basically take constant damage. So yes, technically you will die, but depending on your setup, you might be able to drag out a little bit more time before exploding. :p

Malaise is a French word that means 'discomfort', which is exactly what I feel seeing the bar slowly build up.

It's just like Curse except you have a set number of hits you can survive, no matter how much or how little damage they do to you. The slow death by poisoning at the end is just being sadistic and I love it.

You can find items that drop your Malaise level by 1.

your healing potion gets rid of some malaise as well.

I've survived hitting max malaise a few times by having the time to down a potion.

Doesn't the pool of blood also give you some while standing in it?

If you get to max Malaise and start to lose health can you survive it by travelling into the next Biome? I haven't tried that yet.

It keeps going, so you'll keep dying when you switch zones. Your potion and specific healing items (food that specifically removes malaise) can drop it so you stop dying.

gosh, can this game be more unfair? I did the best to get to that castle with the best weapon and both lifes. Now that stupid new gauge killed me and now I have one life left to fight the king.

Love the game, but man! this is not good.

This game is fairly easy on regular difficulty. Higher difficulties are much worse and even unfair but they are optional and are there to suit skilled and/or masochistic players.

How can be more unfair? I've recently beaten the game in Expert and now in Nightmare, besides the usual more life and more damage done by the mobs, ALL of them give you malaise when hit you and ALL of them can teleport, including the regular ones from the first level, and another new kind of enemy is added to each level (that also happens in Hard). You now could say you have two life bars and you die whenever the malaise bar gets full or the health bar gets empty.

Also some elites have combos which are very difficult to deal with, that's not new (it happens in other difficulties too) but here there are way more elites, so it's easy some elite is in the way in a very bad spot for you to deal with, at least in the beginning (I haven't gone too far yet) when you don't still have a real setup with all four (or five) slots filled. If you combine all of that... well. It's too difficult for me, at least for now. I think I'll stick to Expert for a good while, playing a bit more outside my comfort zone (tactics) to get better and also getting the forge fully upgraded.

And I'm not complaining, just stating that it can get much much more difficult. The jump from Normal to Hard is very big in 1.1, and at first seemed really Huge. Now it doesn't seem a big deal, although of course the forge upgrades and having more mutations and weapons unlocked help. And the elites from the Castle are easier than any regular elite from the same difficulty. They're always the same, no surprises, you should have your setup done at that point and they don't have very nasty skills as many regular elites do.

A few runs more and the Castle elites will seem to you easier than some regular mobs from previous levels.

Listen to the guy above me.
Also you should know on expert and nightmare you do not get your health flask refilled at ANY point doing the run.
I recently started playing again after the update. Before that I was trying to beat nightmare. Expert was easy for me.
Now I went back into it. Think Ive spend 50 hours trying to complete expert again.
Was really rusty so had to get into the groove again.
What Im trying to say is this is the kinda game where you will keep banging your head into a wall. At some point you will break it down, just to find another.
