And I don't mean the whip is melee with long range, I mean it's classed as a ranged weapon, and takes up the ranged weapon "slot" for the perks that give you random starting melee and ranged weapons.
Sorry I know this isn't what you're really asking about it's just I find it odd how many people in these forums keep talking about the whip and comparing it to things like the rusty sword when, if anything, it should be compared to other ranged weapons.
I think it was after the Elemental update patch they pulled back the damage on it and now it's outclassed by other stuff unless you have super high strength. For the most part, it's still super safe compared to most melee weapons because you can hit stuff from a ledge at an angle and they can't hit you back. It also is the best weapon for killing the granade bats that tend to wreck your run if you're not paying attention. Another good use is that it can do some decent chip damage to the final boss while it's jumping around the screen.
I would still take this over most other melee weapons though if you have a problem dodging and/or getting hit by attacks. It's also pretty decent if you have low health so you can cheese through some of the harder levels to find upgrades. I'd say it's better than the balanced blade, but that's all going to depend on your upgrades and skills.
Good luck.
