Save file transfer
So, I know this may be a long shot but...it's worth a try.

Basically I first obtained this game by (cough) extralegal means after seeing some good reviews intending to try it out then move on. Long story short yes it's amazing, I poured hours into it, then finally decided to buy the thing as a show of support for an actually good game.

My question is, is it possible to somehow transfer my save to my Steam copy? Does anyone know where the save files are even kept?

Thanks!

It is.

Your saves on the pirated copy will be in a "saves" folder wherever you extracted the game. The steam saves are located in [steam install directory]/userdata/[your numeric steam ID; if there's only one account on your machine there's only one option here]/588650.

If that directory doesn't exist when you get to looking, start up a fresh save on the steam ver and quit. Paste both the DAT file and the JSON file over, and bob's your uncle.

For the record, I also migrated from a pirated copy to the steam version- didn't have any trouble with missing upgrades, cells, gold, or anything.

Have fun, another-converted-sale-from-piracy!

Thanks for the help!

One problem, the 'save' file is empty for me. When I start the game I do still have my progress but I'm guessing the files are somewhere else?...

If it means anything, I was on the the May version (and there's some SmartSteamEmu file too)

You mean a free demo version.

Hey, I know it's been almost a year, but I just had this problem myself, but your solution didn't work :(
Is it because it's a new version?

Tried that too - the \remote folder is empty, even after playing a few runs. transferring the files there does nothing

Does "Activate Steam Cloud sunchronization" option enabled?
(just in case: try to place settings file at bith places, then enable option)

btw: Just started new save slot - \common\Dead Cells\save is empty, while save file itself was at \588650\remote from the start

Alright, crap.
I tried copying it to common, but now it says it's not compatible with the game version :(

hi, fyi i had the same problem, i deactivated steam cloud save and even deleted the saves in steam folder then i copied the save from the dead cells "demo" folder to the deadcells "fullversion" folder it worked like charm.
Well the options werent 100% but the game save slot worked 100%, then i activated steam cloud save, launched the game, choosed no (used local save), and in the options menu chose to import local save to steamcloud and... DONE :)

This game is really awesome, i had to buy it! :D

You have two save folders, on inside dead cells game folder and the one inside steam folder, copy to both but only the steam folder should matter, the other is only used in "cloud save" off mode

when I put my "user_experimental" save file in, the game does not see it but if I rename it into "user_1" it sees it but says "saved game is incompatible with current game version" can I fix this?

user experimental is the alpha version special save slot, you cannot use it in normal version
