Fallout Shelter
Save file Location
Hi people.

I'm trying to locate my save files, but I cant find them. Have they removed them so it only saves in the cloud?

Actually, this is one of those games that the 'Cloud save' feature doesn't work well with. It's very likely your saves will get corrupted if it's enabled. R-click the game in steam library, open properties, and disable Cloud sync. Now, for your save files... they are kept in your users folder down under the hidden system folder known as 'Appdata.' So, you need to have view settings set to 'Show hidden folders / files.' The default location is;

C:\users\your user name\Appdata\Local\Fallout Shelter

You could have up to 3 vaults for a total of 6 save files. The first vault will have a save (vault1.sav) and a backup save (vault1.sav.bkp.) If your vault gets corrupted and you can't get it to load, you can try using a FOS Save Editor and / or delete the vault1.sav then rename the backup by deleting the .bkp off the end of the file name. It's then vault1.sav. Try loading again. Also, good idea to make a manual backup copy of your saves from time to time if you care about it much.

I don't have any issues with the cloud. But I have only 1 settlement. IDK if it changes anything, but for me it works fine on both pc and deck.

Yeah, you 'can' be fortunate enough to have no issue. But, you're also taking your chances. If you're very concerned about it, I'd strongly suggest making a manual backup once in a while just so you don't lose 'too' much progress if it does get corrupted.

Why does Steam cloud sync corrupt saves for some games? If I were to speculate, I'd think it's most likely there was some interrupt in Internet service when Steam was cloud syncing at the time. That does happen... people's internet service cuts out just briefly for a second due to whatever reason. Most times it's not noticeable cuz things just pickup where it left off. But, for a data transfer, it could corrupt it or fail. Who knows. I just know lots of people have had bug / corruption issues with it enabled. Ymmv

Could the save habits of users also be a factor in that corruption?
Same as the above, I've only ever kept one Vault -- and it has been maintained through the Steam Cloud Saves across at least 3 different computers.
No problems, ever, and I only ever 'Save & Exit'.

True enough. I read reports where people have improperly closed out games and then have corruption issues. And, we can't really know for sure if that maybe the case most the time with people complaining of corruption issues. I do know that Steam cloud sync does in fact cause some odd bug behavior in another game I have... even though I've always been sure to properly save and exit the game. So, it's always best to be in the habit of making manual backups once in a while... that is if your progress is important to you. I tend to get pretty bored in this game after a while. Then I wipe and start over. So, for me, the saves aren't that important. Some may feel pretty attached to theirs though.
