Is this a good background game?

I can't focus when sitting near the PC and listening to my teacher in University courses, but I don't want to play a game that is narrative focused like Dark Souls 3 or Fallout 3, because I feel like these games are wasted if I play them like that. No offense to Fallout Shelter, but this game looks rather casual, is it a good game to just have something play in the background and do something with your hands to keep my distraction aspect in check?

i tried playing this game at work, and i worked 3rd shift at a gas station, by myself. usually it was quiet in there and i could play but when there were customers it became a problem lol

you can get attacked while you're busy and not be able to do anything about it. and it's not just attack from outside sometimes a fire breaks out and you gotta drop dwellers on the fire to put it out before it spreads.

these things would happen when i was busy with a customer and it stressed me out so i stopped playing it at work lol

but you could give it a try. if you set your vault up right the attacks don't matter because the dwellers can handle it. just make sure they're well equipped.

You probably can, but there are random events that can happen which could prove distracting as well. It is a free game, so it's worth a shot at least, but I would also recommend doing a bit of setup before bringing your vault to class so they are a bit better prepared to survive if you can't pay attention for a bit at least.

I mean sitting in front of a computah and listening to a teacher talk about a subject. I just don't want to get distracted and passive video games help me focus.

It requires a decent amount of attention to it. Expecially at late game. There are also some random events happening which require full attention. Mission battles that need full focus or dwellers will die leading to a mission fail or a restart. Missions can take up to 20 minutes to complete. But you can "afk" on empty rooms. Some mobs can almost 1 hit a dweller so you really need to focus on some battles. At base its mostly a "click or drag to collect " mechanic.

I say it's possible to background, but mission restarts might take place.
